Programs

Forest School

Certified Forest School programs run year-round at the Farm & Forest School and emphasize regular and repeated exposure to the same natural space, as the Forest School philosophy entails. This, in addition to child-directed, emergent, place-based, and inquiry-based learning, is what differentiates these types of programs from other outdoor and environmental education programs. As Forest School Canada states, the defining feature of this type of nature-based education program is that children are provided with opportunities to build an ongoing relationship with the land, with a dedicated educator, with one another, and with themselves.
Students attend single or multiple days per week for the entire school year. All of our Forest School programs are led by qualified childcare and/or education professionals. Our staff are either Ontario Certified Teachers, Early Childhood Educators, or have other relevant child care experience.

The following programs are being offered this year:

Preschool

Part-Time, Offered Monday to Friday (Ages 2.5 - 3)

Kindergarten

Part-Time, Offered Monday to Friday (Ages 4 - 6) and Monthly on Mondays

School Age

Part-Time, Offered Wednesday to Friday (Ages 6 - 12) and Monthly on Tuesdays

Weekly Forest School - Preschool

Does your child dream of spending time amongst trees, interacting with animals, and navigating risks around a forest floor? Then why not allow them to explore and learn at the same time? This Preschool program is designed for our youngest learners who are ready to explore the outdoors.

There are paths to be created, shelters to be built, experiments to be investigated, and animal tracks to be followed! These kinds of activities allow children to gain experiences with nature and animals while engaging in the Forest School pillars of trust, reciprocity, and freedom.

Forest School Preschool is open to students ages 2.5 – 3 (born in 2021 or 2022 and must be at least 2.5 years old for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year).

Schedule: Students attend either one day per week or multiple days per week (depending on availability). Programs are offered on school days, Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm (with Before and After School Care options available).

Students attend each week (on their scheduled day) for the entire school year (September until June or whenever the student enrolls).

2023-2024 School Year: Monday, September 11th, 2023 – June 14th, 2024 (View calendar here)

Educators: All of our Forest School programs are led by qualified childcare and/or education professionals. Our staff are either Ontario Certified Teachers, Early Childhood Educators, or have other relevant child care experience. Our staff are trained in First Aid with CPR and AED, as well, they all have recent clear Vulnerable Sector Checks.

Additionally, our Inclusion Facilitator is proud to offer support to children who may have a neurodivergent diagnosis, experience learning differences, and need occasional support to be successful during their Forest School or camp experience. The role of the Inclusion Facilitator is to support an individual child for a short period to reintegrate them back into their group.

Programs offer a 5:1 student-to-educator ratio for a maximum of 5 students per class.

Students must be able to communicate their needs for a restroom and be toilet trained. Also, students must not require naps while at Forest School. Although we realize that our youngest learners may be in the process of transitioning out of naptime, the expectation is that students have the stamina to enjoy an active, outdoor program for the full day.

GROWTH (Grounded, Risky Outdoor Wanders Towards Health)
The goal of GROWTH camp is to help the campers learn how to persevere through challenges, build confidence, and become young leaders. Throughout the week, campers will be given a variety of opportunities to work on each of these goals with a final challenge on Friday.

The GROWTH camp upholds the 10 Forest School principles, including being child-led and inquiry-based. We are fortunate to have enough time in our days to offer adult mentoring and lessons while letting the day unfold according to the group’s interests.

Campers will be participating in daily wanders throughout our property where an educator will lead planned lessons that focus on the following:

  • Physical Health – Outdoor activities, games, group and individual challenges
  • Emotional Health – Learning that failing is okay, Sit Spots, social-emotional literacy
  • Mental/Intellectual Health – Learning new skills such as pattern recognition of bird songs, tracking, navigation, shelter building, and leadership
  • Environmental and Agricultural Health – How to take care of the Earth, understanding the importance of agriculture and the environment for human survival

LIT (Leaders in Training)
This program focuses on developing leadership skills in connection with working with younger campers. Participants will work with their fellow LITs to build trust, complete teamwork challenges, increase their self-awareness, and build self-confidence. Participants will work with younger campers in many capacities, such as assisting counsellors with preparing materials for makerspace activities, games, and activities, supporting campers who enjoy having a special older ‘friend’, eating lunch with campers, etc. LITs will set stretch goals for themselves, such as leading a group activity, song, or story for the group. Participants should be ready to help and serve in order to foster leadership skills. Although they will come alongside the younger campers in a play-based environment, their role is to assist in leading the group (not playing themselves).
